The veneer roller dryer or mesh belt veneer dryer/conveyor in conventional mechanical core veneer dryer machine aids in the drying by transferring heat by conduction to the veneer surface. The heat transfer from the rollers may be as much as 20 percent of the total heat transferred to the veneer. This heat transfer from the rollers is very obvious when comparing the drying rates of veneer through an essentially empty dryer and one in which the conveyor is full of veneer. In the full dryer, the rollers are cooled by the wet veneer and the required drying time for a given final moisture content increases. This means the first veneer through an empty wood veneer dryer will emerge much drier than veneer coming from a full roller veneer drying machine. If the drying time is set according to the first veneer through the veneer dryers, the time will be too short and veneer coming from a full dryer will be much higher in moisture content.
